Selecting Your Roommate

Whether you’re a freshman or a senior, you should always choose your roommates carefully. Consider asking a trustworthy friend to room with you. Even if you room with a friend who drinks, set boundaries from the start by telling them about your decision to stay sober.

If you’re in a dorm, ensure they’re aware that alcohol and other substances are prohibited—this is a rule that’s likely imposed by your school. In addition, don’t be afraid to ask how they intend to use the space. For instance, if they are planning on throwing a lot of parties, or they go out and drink regularly and heavily, they’re likely not the roommates for you.

Build a Support System

It’s important that you tell a few close friends about your sobriety. In building a support system, they can assist you and be more understanding of your situation as temptation arises. Having people on your side that you can trust will make you feel more confident in your sobriety.

That said, you should also consider finding a college counselor that you feel comfortable talking with about your decision to stay sober. This will provide you with a more objective perspective who can help you navigate your college experience. They may also be able to point you to sober groups on campus.

Engage in Sober Activities

Find an activity that you love that’s not centered around the consumption of alcohol or other substances. Colleges offer plenty of these! Stay active with an intramural sport, join something like a book or art club, or become a member of a group that organizes fun activities on campus for other students. In doing the latter, you’ll also likely be providing a great service to other sober members on campus.

Be Prepared for Social Settings

There will likely come a time that you will be in the presence of alcohol. Whether you’re at a party or out having dinner with friends, ensure that someone in your support group is aware. This way, you can hold yourself accountable to maintaining your sobriety if temptation arises. Your support system is there for a reason—never be afraid to use it and reach out when you feel necessary.

Remind Yourself of Past Experiences

Any time you are wrestling with your sobriety, remind yourself of your previous experiences with substance abuse. While using, you may have made poor, detrimental choices, put a strain on your relationships, and made yourself feel ill. Go back to the reasons why you chose to stay sober. These reminders will help keep you from straying off course.
